We did away with the river pebbles that the previous owners put down. Although it looked okay, it was too difficult to walk on and wasn’t very practical (you couldn’t put the BBQ there or put a table there if you wanted to).

Tim expertly built 3 planter boxes to go around the outside of the area, this big long one is 5 metres long:

Then when the planters were in place, it was time to lay some turf. One thing you shouldn’t try at home is to lay turf after 4 days of rain.

Hmm yes this probably wasn’t the most ideal day to be laying turf. I ended up covered in it:
