As I mentioned previously, I’m a Document Production Operator at a law firm. I work the evening shift (from 5pm to 10pm). There are 9 of us on the evening shift. Basically the job involves amending Word documents, preparing new documents and court documents, transcribing letters, memos, file notes, even court transcripts sometimes. They recently introduced digital transcription software so that we can now do work from the other offices in the capital cities. The job involves having a really fast typing speed (I’m 100 word per minute but I’m sure it gets higher than that when I’m on a roll). What I like about the job is the “process” of it – it is very much process work. The author comes to us with a document, tell us what they need doing to the document, put it in the ‘in’ tray, we do it, then we put it in the ‘out’ tray. I do like the routine of it all. However, its also this routine-ness that I’m starting to find frustrating, and I don’t really know why. When we eventually move to Tasmania I don’t think I will miss the actual work, but I will miss the hours and I will miss the pay. The plan is to get a full-time job at a law firm in Hobart (or at the law firm 30 metres down the road from our house on the corner of our block) but secretly I’m hoping to work just 2 or 3 days per week and spend the remaining 2 or 3 days per week at home working on the company that I operate.
