Living in Sydney
I grew up in the southern suburbs of Perth and moved to Sydney in December 1999. Sydney has been kind to me. While I’ve been living in Sydney I managed to save a large house deposit and I managed to start my own company which has also been helpful in terms of saving for the house deposit. However, Sydney is now starting to get to me.
People don’t seem to care about other people. If I fell down a flight of stairs, noone would stop to ask if I was okay, they’d just look at me as if I’m a complete idiot and then quickly turn away and ignore you. The traffic here is also starting to get to me.
A couple of weeks ago we drove into the City on Sunday morning and we were stuck for about an hour in the traffic on King Street in Newtown (inner west Sydney). It just seems like craziness. Maybe its because there’s too much people iomigrating to Sydney. Maybe its because Sydney streets are so badly planned. Maybe its because people rely too much on their cars and should use public transport more.
And just generally when you ring up businesses or try to deal with Government departments it seems that no-one actually knows the answer to any of your questions or its not their department or some other excuse to not have to deal with your inquiry.
Another thing starting to irk me is the rental increases happening here in Sydney recently. Apparently rents have gone up because motgage interest rates have gone up. Well, our rent has gone up by $30 this month and I can tell you right now that the landlord’s mortgage has not gone up by that much! Its just plain greed and opportunism by Sydney landlords and its wrong and I’m sick of it. The people that are really suffering from the mortgage interest rates going up is renters. After all, the renters are the ones trying to save a deposit for their own house on one hand and then with the other hand they are paying exorbitant rents, basically making the saving task near impossible! Something’s got to give, surely?
