The night that I met Amy Butler I discovered we had a little friend living with us (well, living in our backyard I should say). It’s a teenage blue tongue lizard. I say ‘teenage’ because its not yet fully grown, but its also not a baby. He lives in the drain that runs parallel to our front door. Every morning about 10.30 he pokes his head between the grates and if its sunny he comes up and lays just near the grates. He goes back into the drain at about 3:00 in the afternoon. He doesn’t trust me enough to venture very far away from the safety of the pipe (unless I put cheese out to coax him towards me).

The first day after I discovered him I fed him pieces of shredded cheese which he seemed to appreciate. Then after a few serves of cheese I gave him some small pieces of bread. Unfortunately he didn’t eat all of the bread that I left for him, he seemed to lose interest, or maybe he was just full, he is only young after all. Yesterday Tim came up with a great idea for a YouTube series entitled “Will Bluey Eat It?”, kind of like Letterman’s “Will it Float?” (except we don’t have the girls with the sparking power tools). So far this is what we’ve discovered with regard to Bluey’s connoisseur tastes:

Cheese - Tick. His fave.

Bread - Tick. He will eat it but seems to get tired of it quickly.

Pastrami - X. He is not the slightest bit interested.

Cold cooked chicken – I’m not entirely sure about this one. He ate the first 2 or 3 little pieces of cold chicken that I gave him but then lost interest. I’ll try him again when we next have some leftover chicken.

Salami – We left some out for him one night and the next morning it was gone, whether Bluey ate it or another creature ate it we’re not quite sure.

Dry wheat flakes from my breakfast cereal – He’s not the slightest bit interested.

Dry sultanas from my breakfast cereal – I left about 4 shrivelled up sultanas for him. I think he ate one but he left the rest.
